About Dick Preston
Dick Preston isn’t your typical country singer—he didn’t grow up on a farm, doesn’t drive a truck, and spent more time on fishing boats in Alaska than horseback. But don’t let that fool you. With a beat-up guitar case full of stories, a soulful Southern twang, and a honky-tonk heart, Preston delivers the kind of raw, real-deal country music that cuts through the noise. His timeless sound—rooted in classic country, blues, and Americana—has drawn comparisons to Chris Stapleton, Charley Crockett, and Sturgill Simpson. Now based in central Texas, Preston has spent the last 15 years building his career the hard way: busking in Nashville, touring coast to coast, and performing 100+ shows a year everywhere from dive bars to cruise ships. His high-energy live show—whether solo or backed by his band, The Honkies—is equal parts grit, groove, and connection. Preston believes great shows aren’t improvised; they’re built. And he brings the same intention to his studio work, blending the spontaneous spirit of mid-period Dylan with the sturdy craftsmanship of Nashville songwriting.Over the next two years, Preston is set to release two full-length albums, expand his touring loop between Texas and Nashville, and grow Union Booking—a hybrid platform dedicated to helping other independent country musicians succeed. He’s not chasing trends or industry approval. He’s here to lead the party, speak the truth, and remind you what country music sounds like when it actually means something.Want the whole story? No Map, Just Miles:
The Dick Preston Story
Dick Preston never had a hometown. He didn’t grow up on a farm. He wasn’t the captain of the football team. He didn’t marry his high school sweetheart. He doesn’t work construction, doesn’t drive a truck, and he’s spent more time on fishing boats in Alaska than on the back of a horse.Point being: Dick Preston might not fit the modern country cliché—but he’s still the genuine article. A seasoned road dog with a beat-up Gibson guitar and a thousand-watt smile, Preston writes and performs the way country used to be: with grit, heart, and a commitment to truth. He first caught the music bug in high school, when his band played to a packed auditorium in Juneau, Alaska. Mid-song, his guitar cut out. So he walked offstage, grabbed a loaner, came back out to a roaring crowd, and finished the set like nothing happened. That night, he knew he was hooked for life. In the years that followed, he honed his craft in the coffee shops and dive bars of Alaska—eventually becoming a mainstay at the Alaskan Hotel and Bar, where he hosted weekly open mics and cut his teeth as an entertainer. Steeped early in old-time, folk, and blues, Preston developed into a versatile and fearless performer, equally at home on a street corner or festival stage. His performance philosophy has evolved from chasing spontaneity to mastering craft. After years of playing blues clubs across the Midwest, busking in Nashville, touring nationally, and performing on cruise ships, Preston learned that a great show isn’t improvised—it’s built. Today, he approaches the stage with intention: curated setlists, tight musicianship, and a focus on emotional connection. Whether he’s playing a listening room solo or lighting up a packed honky-tonk with his band, Preston commands the room like a seasoned showman. In the studio, Preston tries to bottle lightning. Inspired by the raw, immediate energy of mid-period Dylan and Van Morrison, he favors minimal takes and emotional honesty over polish. At the same time, he respects the structured craftsmanship of the Nashville system—strong melodies, satisfying arcs, and songs with purpose. Like modern high-output artists such as Zach Bryan, Preston sees his recorded work as an ongoing conversation with his audience: release fast, stay honest, and let the people tell you what hits. And Preston’s got stories. He once rolled a car in Colorado and still hitchhiked across the state to make his next show on time. He’s busked his way across the country several times, has played 100+ shows a year in cities from Seattle to Miami since 2021, and worked stages from back-alley taverns to black-tie galas. Through it all, he’s remained fiercely independent and deeply committed to the music. Now based in Central Texas, Preston is doubling down. Over the next two years, he plans to release two full-length albums, expand his touring circuit between Austin and Nashville, and grow Union Booking—his own booking agency and platform for helping other independent country musicians succeed. With a rotating cast of top-tier players known as The Honkies, Preston is building more than a band—he’s building a movement. He’s not trying to fit in with the Nashville machine. In fact, he’d rather burn the whole thing down. Preston stands firmly against the bro-country status quo: the factory-made formulas, the empty clichés, and the slicked-up pop tracks in disguise. “A country song is supposed to be more than a string of buzzwords written by committee ,” he says. “If it doesn't tell you a story, if it doesn't touch your heart, what’s the point?”Dick Preston is here to remind you what country sounds like when it’s played with soul. No labels. No gimmicks. Just real songs, real stories, and a damn good time.
